OMG this is a little vulnerable for me to share because I felt so foolish .
But you don’t know that you don’t know and I really feel compelled to share because I know I won’t be the only one.
Recently I realised that feminism can be a term of many misconceptions!
This realisation landed for me about 2 weeks ago.
It was provoked after I wrote a piece in relation to honouring the women in my tribe. And in that, I had stated that I was not a feminist, because I too support and honour men.
It wasn’t until I received a message from someone I love who has one of the most powerful & kind hearts. Thank you Nga-Atawhainga Manukau!
What she asked with love why did I post such a statement. She asked because it didn’t make sense to her why I would say this, and she was hoping to understand better where it came from.
I shared with her that during my life, I was involved in a conversation where someone was saying feminism & misogyny were the same thing.
I recall it making me feel so uneasy.
So I unconsciously created a belief that I was not a feminist. Because I care about men’s rights as well and I didn’t want to be only supporting women’s rights.
She was so graceful in her response to me, as she further shared what her beliefs around feminism were and why.
How she described feminism was truly beautiful.
She said her take on feminism is supporting women to reach their full potential what ever that looks like and not allowing any one – man or woman – tell them otherwise…obvious examples are breastfeeding in public showing too much skin the way we dress etc… but there were loads of subtle ones too.
I must admit I felt so foolish!
How could I actually think that I was not a feminist, when every inch of me promotes honouring, celebrating & supporting women to unlock their full potential and breakthrough their limiting beliefs.
Experiencing this made me realise that many young girls and women are misinformed about the true meaning of feminism…or perhaps have a misconception around what feminism really mean. Because We are the ones who are most affected in the wage gap and are also among the most affected by domestic violence, among other issues.”
I would love to declare that my understanding is now crystal clear and I am one thousand percent proud to be a feminist. Because although I support equal rights and existence for women. It doesn’t mean I don’t support the same for men.
I am excited to have this shift and now invite you to comment on what your beliefs are around feminism and help bring more awareness to this topic.
Thank You
Love Always Marissa xx
